As per the command of Śrī Gaṇeśa, Lord Brahma began the creation of the universe. While taking rest, two drops of feces came out of Lord Viṣṇu’s ear. These two drops transformed into Madhu and Kaitabha, two very powerful demons. They started to trouble Lord Brahma by creating numerous obstacles in his work of creation. Subsequently, Brahmadeva approached Śrī Viṣṇu to slay the demons. Śrī Viṣṇu was in the blissful state of Yoga Nidra (mystical expression of sleep). Śrī Viṣṇu woke up immediately upon the request of Brahmadeva and saw two demons approaching him. He scooped up his mace, Kaumodaki, in the blink of an eye.

And thus started the first war in the history of the universe. Even after fighting the demons for a long time and failing to beat them, Śrī Viṣṇu went to Bhagwan Śaṃkara for help. Further, Lord Śaṃkara told Śrī Viṣṇu that he did not even remember Śrī Gaṇeśa when faced with a sudden crisis. This forgetfulness of Gaṇeśa has become the reason for your failure. Thus, Śaṃkara preached a six-letter mantra to Śrī Viṣṇu to please Vināyaka. With the help of this Mantra, Śrī Viṣṇu went to a remote island and engaged himself in a veneration of Gaṇeśa. He pleased Vināyaka with the mantra. After Vināyaka gave him a desired boon, Śrī Viṣṇu built a temple of Vināyaka on the hill and installed a Gandaki stone idol of Śrī Gajanana. Śrī Viṣṇu attained Siddhi on this hill it is named as Siddhakshtra or Siddhatek and Vināyaka blessed him thus named Siddhivināyaka. This is the land sanctified by the penance of Viṣṇu and the abode of Siddhivināyaka.

An idol of Śrī Siddhivināyaka is Swayambhu – Self Existent having a height of 3ft and width of 2.5ft. Idol is north facing having a elephant head face i.e. Gajamukha.
